The Avatar of the Bloody-Handed God

Monday, 7 June, 2010

I have been really productive lately, I finished Eldar Avatar in just one weekend. Well, it is only one model, but it is much larger than regular infantry, so I think getting it done in a weekend is pretty good.

I think the way I painted the model will raise different opinions from people. I liked the way my Fire Dragons (and yes, some Bloodletters long time ago) turned out with their burning armour, so I used the same effect with Avatar also. He is not just having a burning armour, but his whole body is molten metal, so there are enough reasons to paint him hot!

The model itself is not converted, although he does not have his hair; I bought the model second hand from internet, and I think he didn’t have it at all. Well, at least my Avatar is different now than most!

I tried to paint his loin-cloth white, but it didn’t work out. So, with some feedback and ideas from my wife, it ended up being red. Now Avatar and his tag-team partner Wraithlord have similar gear, so it works out fine.

Phew, not so many Eldar left anymore: 1,5 Harlequins, repainting Pathfinders’ guns and gems and a couple of tanks.

So here is the pic, and also some orks with new pics:

Phoenix Lord Maugan Ra

Friday, 4 June, 2010

I just finished painting Maugan Ra, the Phoenix Lord of Dark Reapers. I really enjoyed painting the model, it has really aged well and has lots of character. Although one could say that the model looks like an Eldar in a halloween costume.

The painting itself was really straightforward, with nothing too fancy. I think white worked really well as bone, and you can see the difference when compared to blueish white I used for Eldrad’s shiny white helmet. I am also pleased with the Maugetar’s (the weapon) blade, the effect turned out the way I wanted it to be.

I also put the model on a bigger base, as the wide pose looked silly on a small base, with feet coming over the edges. This also allowed me to put an Ultramarine helmet and some wood on it, to give some special attention special characters deserve.

Next I am doing the Avatar for Eldar. Stay tuned!

More aspect warriors

My Eldar project is still going strong. I managed to repaint my old Fire Dragons, to give me some much needed anti-tank to destroy all those dreadnoughts and monstrous creatures that are too strong for my other units to tackle.

I wanted to paint these models to look like their armour was really hot, as there was a small piece of fluff in Eldar Codex telling that the Exarchs (unit leaders) can even create a flaming corona to surround them. I think the effect worked out quite well.

The only model that was converted was the Exarch, who got a longer gun (Firepike) and a new fist to shake at enemies. The fist is from a night goblin, who would have thought that it would fit so well there!

Next I will be painting the Phoenix Lord so closely linked to Altansar, Maugan Ra himself.

And oh yes, I also took a new pic of my Dark Reapers, which you can see here also:

Form Eldrad Ulthran to the Highseer of Altansar

Friday, 21 May, 2010

Painting of my Eldar continues, this time I have been working on Eldrad Ulthran -special character farseer. As Eldrad (being a seer of Craftworld Ulthwé and also, well, dead) didn’t really fit into my Altansar -army, I wanted him to be the Highseer of Altansar. This way I can easily use the model in my army, while still keeping the theme of the craftworld.

The model, although relatively old, is a really good sculpt and fits well with all the new Eldars. It has a lot of character in it, and although many of the older models are really static, the model looks like he is casting some psychic powers to his enemies, or just posing around like a true hero on the battlefield. So all in all it was really fun to paint the model, although I do have to question why Games Workshop only sells this model through their online store? I am sure I am not the only only who wanted the model! In the end I bought mine through internet from another gamer.

So my army is growing quite nicely. Not only is the Ropecon -tournament coming (at least I hope so), but there is some Apocalypse -action within a month at the gaming club I run, so some more Eldars could be useful.

Let the Blogging Begin!

Monday, 17 May, 2010

The testing is now over (although some minor tweaking might be done), and the site is shaping up the way I like it to be. Huge thanks to Redrum for making it technically possible!

This is kind of a first “blog entry” for this, well, blog. I hope to add regular updates, with of course pictures of painted stuff where possible. But not only new stuff, I am also planning to take new pics and edit them for easy viewing to the “Gallery” -section. You can see the results also in this post.

The idea is also to have each unit named as well. This is for following reasons:
a) I think it’s cool
b) It adds to the storylines of games
c) Painted models deserve some extra attention
d) I like it
e) Naming models is fun

Here are some examples to this, the first older paintings to get new pics:

But this blog needs some new stuff also! I am currently preparing my Eldar -army for a tournament in july, so Eldar are on top in my priority list. I have converted some jetbikers by combining Dark Eldar bikes with (mostly) Eldar riders, add some greenstuff and you can see the end results here:
